Correcting Misinformation... Sharing news from one of our partners...

CBFNC Coordinator Encourages Fellowship to Speak Up

Recent articles in both print and electronic secular media regarding the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship have been unfair and misleading. The following statement about CBF National and CBF of North Carolina will provide information for those in our Fellowship to use in responding to questions, criticisms, concerns, etc, that they may receive from church members and others in their communities. Please use the information provided below to write letters to the editor, internet posts, etc., to newspapers, television stations and other media outlets in your local communities. Please speak up. Your positive presentation of our Fellowship will do much to counter the negative perceptions that have been publicized and will provide an opportunity to be a positive witness for Jesus Christ.

Larry Hovis
CBFNC Executive Coordinator

Recent Associated Press accounts of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina’s meeting Nov. 10-11 have characterized the national Cooperative Baptist Fellowship as “gay friendly,” “liberal” and “does not support the belief that the Bible is entirely without error.” These are gross exaggerations based on comments made by Fellowship opponents on the floor of the Convention.

These reports are examples of bad journalism. Associated Press presented a one-sided and inaccurate description of the Fellowship. No member of the Fellowship was contacted before the stories were distributed. When national CBF staff contacted AP to correct the misinformation, much of the inaccurate descriptions were left in the story, and the new story that was distributed the next day included only an additional comment about the Fellowship’s hiring and funding policy on homosexuality. For more information about CBF’s position on homosexuality and related issues, visit http://www.truthaboutcbf.net/.

CBF is a fellowship of Baptist Christians and churches who share a passion for the Great Commission of Jesus Christ and a commitment to Baptist principles of faith and practice. More than 5,000 churches have contributed to the Fellowship since it was founded in 1991.
These churches and individuals are Bible-believing, evangelistic, socially-conscious and committed to resolving difficult doctrinal and cultural issues for themselves through interpreting the Scriptures under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Fellowship’s staff does not speak for the Fellowship’s partnering congregations nor dictate Biblical positions.

Headquartered in Atlanta, the Fellowship’s mission is to serve Christians and churches as they discover and fulfill their God-given mission. Supported by more than 1,800 churches and an additional 3,500 individuals, the Fellowship has 163 field personnel serving around the world, partners with 15 theology schools and has endorsed more than 600 chaplains and pastoral counselors.

The Fellowships’ core values include the Baptist principles of soul freedom, Bible freedom, church freedom and religious freedom; biblically-based Global Missions; the resource model; justice and reconciliation; lifelong learning and ministry; trustworthiness; and effectiveness. The Fellowship acts on these values through four initiatives – faith formation, building community and networking, leadership development and global missions.

CBF has a priority commitment to the local congregation. By providing resources to enhance the ministries of the local church, the Fellowship lives out its vision for being the presence of Christ in the world. Spiritual formation, Missional engagement, and ministerial readiness are at the heart of the work of the Fellowship. Today more than ever, the local church needs trusted resource providers that will help enhance outreach and enrich fellowship. CBF is committed to being such a partner.

CBF has existed for eighteen years. While still in a formative period, the Fellowship continues to seek God’s guidance and direction. CBF remains committed to the core values that formed it. Additionally, several patterns of effectiveness have emerged.

A strong commitment to partnering – CBF does not intend to own buildings, publishing houses, or delivery systems. CBF seeks partnerships that can extend the ministry of the Fellowship while bringing new relationships into the Fellowship movement. In addition to more than 1,800 partnering churches, CBF collaborates with more than 150 different partnering agencies to expand its reach.

In addition to the national CBF organization, the Fellowship movement includes eighteen autonomous state and regional organizations, one of which is Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina (CBFNC). CBFNC is governed and financed separately from other CBF entities, but works closely in partnership to engage in missions, evangelism, leadership development and support for congregational ministries.

Constituted in 1994, CBFNC has offices in Winston-Salem and a paid staff of ten. Its ministries include missions in North Carolina, Ukraine and Belize; support of theological education; church planting; retreats and conferences for children, youth, adults, lay leaders and clergy; college campus ministries; position search assistance for churches and ministers; and much more. Its stated mission is “bringing Baptists of North Carolina together for Christ-centered ministries.” For more information about the principles and ministries of CBFNC, visit http://www.cbfnc.org/).

CBFNC also has partnerships with historic North Carolina Baptist agencies and institutions such as Baptist colleges, Baptist Children’s Homes, Baptist Retirement Homes and Baptist Hospital. Some churches choose to fund these agencies, as well as CBF and CBFNC, through a giving mechanism called the Mission Resource Plan (see http://www.cbfnc.org/missionresourceplan.asp for more details).

Economic Reality

From the Pastor…

These last few weeks have been discouraging to all of us who have investments held in the stock market. We have lamented our losses and fretted over our futures. We will soon have new chief executives in our state and country, and from the tone of the campaigning, I feel confident that there will be many unhappy people – regardless of who wins the election. The only thing that seems certain in these days is that we are facing much more uncertainty.

As a result of the financial crisis, we have been forced to make some hard decisions. Because people are frightened or already in financial distress, many are not contributing to the church as they have in the past. This is reality. As a result, the church must cut our spending to the absolute minimum. We are not broke, but we are not in great shape either. Add to that the rising cost of doing business and the fact that money is not readily available from lending institutions (many churches are being denied loans for any construction), it has become necessary to suspend our capital campaign for the time being.

This does not mean that we are giving up… only that we are trying to use wise judgment in the face of a world-wide financial crisis unlike any seen in most of our lifetimes. Our capital campaign consultants believe we have made the right decision, and we all are praying that the financial climate will improve quickly, and we will be able to resume our campaign early in 2009. However, we are still actively pursuing funds for our project! Fundraising will continue. And all gifts are needed and greatly appreciated.

But the news is not all bad. First of all, some adjacent property has become available for the church to purchase. If we act quickly, we will be able to acquire enough land to solve all of our building concerns for the foreseeable future. Please prayerfully consider contributing toward this urgent need, and be present at our Quarterly Church Conference on November 12th, when we will discuss this one-time opportunity.

What’s more, I have even better news to share! You see, even though times are tough and people are hurting, we are closer yet to the return of Christ for His Bride – the Church. We are not without hope! Regardless of what the world tells us, we DO have a reason to rejoice. If we are in despair because of the current state of our world, then we are guilty of putting our faith in the wrong place to begin with. My brothers and sisters, through Jesus Christ, we are more than conquerors! I am confident that our God will complete what He has started in us and through us. Be of good cheer!

In Christian Love,

Billy Dennis

West Virginia - Thursday

Today began with another great breakfast. Afterwards, we said goodbye to some of the members of our team who needed to get back to NC. Then Pastor Jerry took me and Lynda, Will, Lynne, Charlene, Wiley and 3 ladies from Calvary to visit a couple of shut-ins who were really isolated up in the mountains. After a wonderful visit, we returned to camp for lunch.

Jim, David & Danny replaced a porch floor this morning before returning for lunch. After lunch, David, Jim & Lynda headed back to NC. I took Wiley, Danny, Charlene, Will & Lynne up to the little village of Cass, where we shopped in the Company Store and toured the museums and saw the trains in this lovely little town that was once a thriving hub of a huge logging operation.

We then visited the National Radio Astronomy Observatory , where we took a very interesting tour. After touring the Observatory, we went back to Marlinton for dinner at the Greenbriar Grille, then returned to the retreat center.

We plan to leave for home after breakfast tomorrow.

It has been a wonderful week. We have truly been blessed and have seen visible signs that the ministry we are doing here is making a difference in people's lives. Tonight we had a waitress who was very thankful for the clothes that she and her young son received from our giveaway this week.

Pray for us as we journey home on Friday. We plan to share photos and testimonies about our trip on Sunday, October 12th.

West Virginia – Wednesday

Today we began with a great, hot breakfast. Following breakfast, Lynda, Wiley, Pat and Sharon went with Pastor Jerry to visit shut-ins. Jim, David, Bobby & Don went back to finish the home repair project – installing a shower and lavatory in the bedroom of a handicapped man. Danny, Charlene, Joe, Algaree, Will, Lynne and I went back to downtown Marlinton for the third day of the clothing giveaway. We also gave away approximately 100 bags of food. At the end of the day, we decided to donate the remaining clothes to a local thrift store. We cancelled the giveaway tomorrow because of all the rain that is expected this evening.

It rained off and on throughout the day. It was windy and cool, with the high in the upper 50’s. After we returned to the camp, it rained pretty hard until time for church.

Tonight we led worship at First Baptist Church in Huntersville. I preached; Lynne and Danny did a great job singing a nice duet; and the entire team sang a song and shared scripture. It was a great service, and the people of FBC were very appreciative for all that we have done this week.

After the service, we returned to camp and had dessert and fellowship with the other teams. Besides our 15, there are 4 from Calvary in Rocky Mount, 4 from Whitestone in Chesapeake, VA, 7 from Springfield in Nashville, TN, and 6 cooks from Rocky Mount, plus the wonderful representative from Hands on Mission, Larry Grooms. It is a great group of folks, with whom we have had an awesome time!

Tomorrow some of our group is returning to Raleigh because of other obligations, but there will be some of us doing shut-in visitation and some doing home repairs in the morning. We have the afternoon free, so our group plans to visit the National Radio Astronomy Observatory just up the road in Green Bank, WV. Afterwards, we plan to enjoy dinner out while the group from Tennessee conducts services at the men’s prison. We plan to return home after breakfast on Friday.

We will have some wonderful stories to tell when we get home!

West Virginia - Tuesday

Today was a wonderful day in West Virginia! We divided into 3 different groups this morning. Jim, Don, Bobby and David went to the home of a shut-in, where they installed a shower. They will finish that job tomorrow. Lynda, Wiley and Danny visited 10 shut-ins with "sunshine bags." They made some meaningful visits. I took Pat, Sharon, Lynne, Will, Algaree, Joe and Charlene to the Greenbriar Birthing Center - a federal prison for pregnant inmates. The girls can keep their babies with them at the BC for 18 months before they must return to regular prison.

Our group had a very good day. The children were very sweet and the girls really appreciated our ministry. They especially enjoyed doing crafts. We played with the babies and fed the girls pizza. Pat did a very nice job with the Bible Study and Lynne planned the crafts.

After an excellent dinner tonight, 9 of our folks left to go to the Denmar state prison to worship with the men there.

Tomorrow we will send groups to do home repair, visitation, and back to the clothing giveaway. We will also give away food tomorrow and lead the worship services at First Baptist Church in Huntersville tomorrow night.

West Virginia - Monday

We had a great breakfast this morning, then we headed to downtown Marlinton, where we gave away LOTS of clothing, toys, and bedding. After unloading the truck, we took the school supplies to the Marlinton Elementary School and the staff was very appreciative. Some of us then drove to Lewisburg to return the rental truck and to buy food for the giveaway on Wednesday. The clothing giveaway went on until 4 pm. We made many bags of food for Wednesday. Another group will do the clothing giveaway tomorrow, while some of our folks visit shut-ins and do home repairs. Eight of us will be ministering at the Greenbriar Birthing Center tomorrow, then we will all go to Denmar Correctional Facility tomorrow night for worship.

We had a good day - enjoyed great fellowship with one another, made some new friends, visited with some old friends, shared the love of Jesus with over 100 people, and (of course) ate some very good food. I plan to post more information here each day and will be posting some photos soon.

Continue to pray for us as we minister here. Today the weather was gorgeous. Tomorrow may bring some rain, and each day promises to get cooler. Right now it is pretty cold as I prepare for some rest.

West Virginia Team Arrives

The last of our group of 15 arrived in Huntersville a little after 10 pm tonight. We are off to bed because we have a long week ahead of us. Please keep us in your prayers as we begin tomorrow morning giving away the tons of clothing, food, and toys that we brought. Check back daily for updates and photos.

YMCA

Have you visited the new Kraft Family YMCA on Holly Springs Road? Well, the YMCA has visited SCBC, and they like what they have seen! So much so, in fact, that we have agreed to a partnership with the Kraft Family YMCA to begin a half-day preschool at Swift Creek next Fall.

We will continue to offer our Mother’s Morning Out Ministry for infants up to two years old – now for five days a week. The Y will offer preschool here for 2 year olds on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and for 3 year olds on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The hours will be from 9am until 12 noon. The Y will handle all of the responsibilities, including personnel (they are offering our teachers the first opportunities to work for them), payroll (relieving our staff and volunteer treasurer), publicity, supplies, insurance, etc.

Space does not permit a comprehensive explanation of the significance of this partnership, but please feel free to contact me or Krista McClain or Kristie Ayscue with any questions or concerns you may have. However, I will say that we visited a church in Cary that has partnered with the Y in this ministry for the past 12 years, and we were completely impressed. The Y provides things like computers, toys, playground equipment, and needed building improvements (all of which are for the church’s use when they are not here). They also bring a very positive reputation and common Christian mission to the partnership. They have agreed to promote our church in their publications and through the preschool communications, and they expect to bring an additional 50-60 children to our church each week – children from families we will have the opportunity to reach! In return for using our space, the Y will make a significant monthly contribution to Swift Creek. This is guaranteed fixed income that will go into our General Budget Fund. Simply put, this is a win-win for both the YMCA and SCBC!

Our church staff, our MMO staff, our deacons, our finance committee, and our church council are all very excited about this wonderful opportunity. Please be in prayer for the YMCA and our MMO staff and children during this transition. To aid the transition, our MMO will operate their previously planned 2 day Summer program, while the YMCA will operate a 3 day program. Then in the Fall, the YMCA will begin their 5 day program while we continue to offer infant care simultaneously.

The fact that the YMCA approached us about this partnership is a testament to the tremendous job that our MMO has done over the last few years. I would like to especially thank Kristie Ayscue for her dedication and leadership since we began our MMO Ministry, and for her selfless efforts to make this partnership a reality.

I am confident that God will bless this stewardship of resources and cooperative effort between SCBC and the YMCA.

Encouragement

I don't know who wrote the following poem, but I believe it is worth sharing. I first read this tonight in the E-letter of my good friend, Pastor Caroll Anthony of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Marshville, NC.

A Poem Of Possibilities

If every person walked the talk,
Can you imagine how it would be?
A world filled with good intentions
That all became reality.

We could count on one another,
And coexist respectfully.
There would be no broken promises,
And no hypocrisy.

We'd have no problem spotting heroes,
They'd be everywhere to see.
Just by looking in the mirror,
We all would find integrity.

If everybody did what's right,
Most rules we wouldn't need.
Conscience, trust, and common sense
Would be the things that we'd all heed.

There would be no hurtful actions
In the news that we would read.
Only story, after story
Of yet another noble deed.

And when it came to raising children
With young characters to mold and feed,
The best lessons they could ever learn
Would come by merely following our lead.

If each of us behaved beliefs
There'd be little cause for fear.
All actions would be honorable,
Our values would be clear.

Just by watching what it is we DO,
One could tell what we hold dear.
For our principles would be acts you see,
Not merely words you hear.

It's a challenging task to Walk the Talk
Every hour, day, and year.
And we ALL can do a better job,
Let's start RIGHT NOW...RIGHT HERE!

Show me some love!

Show me some love! That is an oft-repeated phrase among the hip young people of our day. An old song reminds us that “what the world needs now is love, sweet love.” I would add that the love of God is what people really need! February is known as the month in which we show our love, especially on Valentine’s Day. This month, I pray that we will not only show our love to our mates and our families, but that we will make an extra effort to show some love to those who are hurting – and to those who don’t have others in their lives who give them any real love.

One way we are able to show love is through feeding the hungry. As I tallied the numbers from the last quarter of 2007, I was pleasantly surprised at how much love Swift Creek has shown to our hungry neighbors. I think you will find these figures very encouraging – but also surprising, when we consider that these numbers represent only a fraction of the hurting and hungry people we are called to assist.

From October 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007, we provided 118 hot meals through our MANNA ministry. During that time, we assisted 438 individuals by providing grocery items through food distribution (Angel Food, emergency assistance, food pantry, etc). All totaled, we fed 556 people in the last quarter! And (this is perhaps the most encouraging news to me) more than 40 SCBC volunteers were involved in some form of ministry to the hungry during those months! During that same period, we reported 111 evangelistic encounters, with 10 professions of faith confirmed, and 710 Bibles or gospel tracts were distributed. Praise the Lord!

It is now 2008, and we have most of the year still ahead – and there are many more hungry people and lost people all around us. February is a perfect time for all of us to get involved and show some love. Will you volunteer to deliver a hot meal to someone in need? Will you refer someone to our food pantry? Will you purchase an Angel Food unit to help an individual or family? Will you volunteer your time and sweat to one of these ministries? The opportunities to show some love in very tangible ways exist for each of us this year. Let me know of your willingness, and I will be happy to show you how to get involved.

Finally, let me share with you my enthusiasm for our overwhelmingly positive vote to proceed with Phase One of our Long Range Plans, as we begin to have final plans drawn and solicit bids for a family life center. I believe that this project will honor our Lord and show love to our community and church family for generations to come. However, it does come with a price tag (as most good things do). Therefore, I pray that we will all show our commitment to this project by giving above our tithes to the Building Construction Fund, so that we might be able to avoid any huge, long-term debt.

Starting this February, there will be a new Youth Fellowship time. Our youth will begin meeting the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. Our activities and times may vary month to month so be sure to check the church calendar!

Also, look for details on the bulletin board in the youth room where dates, activities, times and cost will be posted. We hope that you will make plans to attend these youth fellowship opportunities!
